This position is responsible for supervising correctional officers and inmates.
- Provides for the security and safety of inmates and employees during assigned shifts.
- Determines the staffing levels required for critical post assignments.
- Trains correctional facility personnel in the performance of duties; supervises assigned correctional facility personnel; ensures that assigned officers adhere to state and institute rules and regulations.
- Enforces department rules, LOP, and regulations; recommends changes to improve the organization’s efficiency and effectiveness.
- Performs first aid and CPR as required; maintains annual certification.
- Employs self-defense techniques when handling aggressive inmates.
- Maintains firearms certification.
- Maintains the security of the facility by ensuring that all inmates are present, controlling entrances and exits, and searching inmates and cells for contraband.
- Directs the transportation of inmates to and from court, medical appointments, and other correctional facilities as required.
- Assigns state and county inmates to work details such as kitchen and maintenance duty; ensures that inmates’ skills are appropriate for assigned tasks.
- Reviews incident reports.
- Monitors inmate count procedures.
- Supervises the monitoring of electronic surveillance equipment and the examination of incoming and outgoing mail.
- Supervises routine cleaning and maintenance activities within the institution.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Knowledge of modern corrections practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of first aid and CPR.
- Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws.
- Knowledge of state Department of Corrections regulations.
- Knowledge of self-defense techniques and equipment.
- Skill in operating communications equipment such as a two-way radio, multi-line telephones, and computer systems.
- Skill in preparing and reviewing reports.
- Skill in the use of firearms, restraints, chemical agents, and security devices.
- Skill in supervision and management.
- Skill in assessing situations, resolving problems, and making decisions in order to maintain safety and security.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Minimum Educational and Training Requirements
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Must have a minimum of two years experience as a sworn correctional officer at Muscogee County Prison or a similar corrections or law enforcement agency or the United States military agency. Employee must be P.O.S.T. certified as a correctional officer and in good standing. Must be physically fit to assume duties as described in job description. Employee must have no disciplinary actions resulting in suspension without pay or forfeiture of vacation time in the prior six months. Personal appearance must be in compliance with Officer Manual standards. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

- Mental Acuity – ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning.
- Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.
- Pushing – use upper extremities to press against objects with force, or thrust forward, downward, outward.
- Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
- Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
- Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
- Standing – for sustained periods of time.
- Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.
