Major Duties and Responsibilities

Receives, monitors, and dispatches radio and telephone communications traffic for emergency and non-emergency situations. Dispatches appropriate personnel to incident locations. Accesses GCIC and NCIC in order to process vehicle and name checks as requested by field personnel; locates and verifies criminal warrants on suspects. Processes stolen vehicle and wanted or missing persons requests as requested by field personnel. Receives and screens all incoming telephone calls from the public and other public safety agencies; categorizes and prioritizes calls. Monitors the Government Center Complex security system. Maintains a continuous log of incoming telephone and radio calls. Monitors the location of patrol vehicles during the shift. Enters information into computer such as dispatch cards, traffic citations, police reports, and case data. Assists the public by providing directions and information. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as department policies and procedures. Knowledge of the regulations and procedures of state crime information centers. Knowledge of the geography and street system of the county. Knowledge of the radio codes used in public safety work. Knowledge of dispatching procedures. Skill in the operation of radio/communications equipment. Skill in the operation of computers. Skill in the using of general office equipment. Skill in dealing with the public. Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports. Skill in making decisions accurately and rapidly. Skill in oral and written communication.

Minimum Educational and Training Requirements

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions and to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.Possession of or ability to readily obtain GCIC/NCIC certification.

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table, standing, walking, or stooping.
