Major Duties and Responsibilities

This position conducts inspections of electrical systems and equipment to ensure compliance with electrical codes and standards.

  • Patrols assigned district to ensure all construction work is permitted; checks ongoing jobs to ensure inspections have been requested.
  • Responds to telephone calls from contractors and the general public; answers questions from contractors, architects, and engineers.
  • Enters data into computer system to create a permanent record of each construction job and related inspections.
  • Participates in weekly electrical training classes.
  • Fuels, cleans, and maintains assigned vehicle.
  • Attends departmental staff meetings. Writes requests for compliance and citations; prepares and presents court cases.
  • Coordinates with Georgia Power to ensure safe and timely connection and disconnection of electrical services.
  • Carries out a continuous effort to improve operations, work processes, and works cooperatively and jointly to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws applicable to electrical codes.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of building and construction site electrical systems inspections.
  • Knowledge of Lotus Notes computer software.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city and other local areas.
  • Skill in conducting electrical code enforcement inspections.
  • Skill in the use of specialized electrical tools for testing electrical systems.
  • Skill in problem solving and decision making.
  • Skill in operating standard office equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Minimum Educational and Training Requirements

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain International Code Council (ICC) certifications of Residential Electrical Inspector within two years and Commercial Electrical Inspector within three years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

The work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching.   • Visual Acuity 4 - operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment.
  • Visual Acuity 5 -close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts.
  • Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.

The work is typically performed in an office, construction site, or other field environment. Travel may be required from job site to job site. May be exposed to noise, dust, and electrical energy.
