Job Description
The QC Technician – Foundry (Lab) plays a critical role in operations by verifying that sand systems, molten metal, and castings meet internal quality standards and customer specifications. This position is responsible for performing routine laboratory testing, in-process verification, and final inspection support using a variety of testing equipment and measurement tools. The technician works closely with melting, molding, and finishing personnel to identify nonconforming product, contain defects, and support corrective actions. Attention to detail, consistency in testing methods, and adherence to established foundry and laboratory safety procedures are required to minimize scrap, rework, delays, and customer issues while ensuring consistent product quality.
Responsibilities:
- Interpret work instructions, control plans, and specifications to determine testing requirements and acceptance criteria.
- Perform routine sand testing, including moisture, permeability, and strength testing, in accordance with established procedures.
- Collect and prepare molten metal samples and perform chemical analysis using spectrometers or other lab equipment as required.
- Conduct hardness testing and assist with dimensional or visual inspection of castings as needed.
- Verify that test results meet required specifications and report out-of-spec conditions immediately.
- Record test results accurately in logs, spreadsheets, or systems to maintain traceability and support quality reporting.
- Identify nonconforming product, assist with segregation and containment, and initiate nonconformance reporting (NCRs) in accordance with company procedures.
- Work with melting, molding, and finishing teams to communicate quality issues, clarify requirements, and support timely disposition of suspect product.
- Assist in root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions related to casting defects, sand system variation, and process instability.
- Use basic statistical techniques and sampling plans as directed to monitor process capability and identify trends.
- Verify calibration status of testing equipment and remove out-of-calibration tools from service.
- Support and follow quality system requirements, including ISO 9001:2015 documentation, procedures, and work instructions.
- Maintain clean, orderly lab and testing areas, including proper storage and handling of samples, tools, and equipment.
- Assist in training operators and new employees in sampling methods, testing procedures, and quality expectations as directed.
- Communicate effectively in writing and verbally to document findings and relay information to production, engineering, and management.
Additionally, safety is our highest priority and safety procedures and guidelines must be always adhered to. This includes wearing PPE such as hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, flame retardant clothing, and steel toe work boots.
