Position Goal

Assist Physician(s) in Clinic with patient care activities. Functions as surgical tech during operative and other invasive procedures in accordance with credentials, privileges, experience, education and competency verification. Complete administrative duties as required.

Position Responsibilities:

Medical Assistant

  • Familiarity with what the physician requires for a productive clinic.
  • Review and maintain charts to ensure completeness/EMR guidelines w/reviewing clinicals.
  • Escort patient from waiting area to triage area, ranging from those patients with full mobility to limited mobility.
  • Constant monitoring of schedules and patient flow during clinic to ensure maximum efficiency/organization.
  • Review initial vital signs evaluation to include any lab specimens
  • Remove staples, sutures, and assist with minor surgical procedures as needed
  • Assist with placement, removal, and instruction of DME devices such as splints, casting, immobilizers, braces, and bandages
  • Clean and sterilize equipment using approved techniques
  • Clean and stock exam rooms and change sheets on exam tables after each patient
  • Communicate restrictions and instructions to patients
  • Follow up calls to patients after surgery or other invasive procedure to document their progress
  • Communication with outside facilities for scheduling tests or surgery to include having any necessary orders, pre-cert, or referral information ready
  • Completion of insurance, disability, and FMLA forms in a timely manner
  • Assist in administrative duties as required, to include but not limited to: collection of past due balances when scheduling surgery, check in/check out; scheduling appointments, procedures, and surgeries, pre-cert procedures, insurance verification, data entry, posting charges, and assisting secretaries.

Certified Surgical First Assistant

  • Review patient health data relevant to the operative or invasive procedure (e.g., history and physical)
  • Serve as surgical tech during routine or emergency surgical procedures.Â
  • Surgical Tech duties may include placing sutures, operating staplers, opening and closing incisions at the direction of the surgeon with the surgeon present, cauterizing vessels, placing drains, dressings and other activities as directed by the primary surgeon.
  • Surgical Tech duties may include positioning and prepping the patient, aspirating and sponging blood and fluids, wound and organ retraction, tying knots, cutting sutures and any other activity as directed by the primary surgeon.
  • Assist with ensuring the operating room has all the supplies, instrumentation and equipment required for a specific procedure.
  • Obtains x-rays and medical records for the physician’s review.Â
  • Ensure the work environment is free of unsafe conditions, clutter and practices.Â
  • Evaluates work conditions to ensure safe practices, infection control policies and procedures and life and fire safety programs are met.
  • Transport patient to the operating room with the assistance of the circulating nurse or the anesthesiologist. Perform surgical preps including draping patient as appropriate for surgical procedure.
  • Serve as a resource to peers, colleagues, and others in relation to surgical tech activities.
  • Maintain regulatory, credentialing, and privileging requirements necessary for surgical tech.
  • Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to first assistant activities.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.

Experience:

Required:

  • 1 year of OR experience required

Preferred:

Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist Program. Orthopaedic Surgical experience

Education:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist program

Licensure/Certification:

Required:

  • BLS required
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) in good standing

Preferred:

Surgical Technologist Certification

Special Qualifications:

Required:

  • Must be able to work independently and have working knowledge of HIPAA requirements.
  • Knowledge of the health care field and medical specialty.Â
  • This position may require irregular work hours.
