Position Goal
Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Director of Emergency Department Services (EDS) is responsible on a 24 hour basis for the planning and comprehensive operations of the Emergency Department, ensuring compliance with hospital and nursing mission, goals, philosophy, policies, and procedures. The Director of EDS utilizes the nursing process in the delivery of patient care and ensures quality care is provided through appropriate allocation of human resources, maintaining financial control of the unit, and serving as a liaison between administration and staff. This individual demonstrates personal and professional responsibility; participates in creating an atmosphere of mutual trust, acceptance, recognition, and respect; and assumes responsibility for own professional development. The Director of EDS serves as liaison to physicians, administration, and hospital staff.
Position Responsibilities:
Administrative and Resource Management
• Participates in nursing and organizational policy formation and decision making.
• Maintains records and reports for administrative and regulatory purposes.
• Assumes accountability for all services/care provided within the Emergency Department.
• Consistently delivers on commitments.
• Takes a strategic approach to identifying problems and opportunities and setting priorities.
• Aligns people with the organization’s strategic and operational objectives.
• Adopts new approaches when circumstances demand it.
• Determines staffing needs, work methods, and performance standards to ensure adequate and appropriate coverage to meet operational needs.
• Assumes responsibility for staffing/scheduling personnel reflecting appropriate utilization of personnel according to the flexible staffing model.
• Makes every attempt to adequately staff unit. Monitors schedule for adequate coverage and inappropriate use of overtime. Makes every attempt to find coverage for unit when there is a shortage due to staff call-outs. Functions as staff RN during staffing shortage when necessary to assure that safe, quality care is provided with appropriate nurse to patient ratios.
• Quality Measures consistently at benchmark; any variances are assessed and justified.
• Oversees the maintenance of unit equipment, reports and resolves problems promptly.
• Accountable for department operations on a 24 hour basis including responding to emergencies.
• Ensures adequacy of EMS communications and physician EMS command and provide significant input into disaster planning.
• Cooperates with the hospital management and nursing leadership to ensure departmental policies and procedures exist for dealing with legal issues in clinical care, e.g., crime, STD, coroner’s cases, alcohol and substance abuse, minors, and child abuse.
• Functions as house supervisor when deemed necessary by CNO.
Clinical and Staff Development
• Cultivates a positive work environment.
• Gives frequent constructive feedback.
• Participates in recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel.
• Conducts staff meetings for communicating pertinent nursing and hospital information.
• Monitors the job performance of each employee and conducts annual performance appraisals, on time and 100% rate.
• Ensures that a comprehensive, continuous and systematic patient assessment is completed and documented on all patients within the timeframe established by policy and that assessment information is obtained from the patient, family, and members of the health care team.
• Facilitates orientation and in-service training for department staff to promote professional growth.
Patient Safety/Quality Improvement
• Identifies, monitors, and documents relevant indicators of quality.
• Reports results of performance improvement initiatives as scheduled.
• Designs performance improvement projects for department, and ensures completion of the process.
• Uses data to improve patient outcomes and safety.
• Shares results of all applicable monitoring with staff.
• Seeks out resources to assist in improving patient outcomes and safety.
Experience:
- 3 years of ER clinical experience required. Nursing management experience preferred.
Education:
- Basic education for RN licensure required, BSN preferred.
Special Qualifications:
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Licensure:
- Current Alabama or Multi-State RN License or the ability to obtain license required.
