Position Summary

The Diagnostic Ultrasound Sonographer (Echo Trainee) is an entry-level clinical role designed for individuals with prior ultrasound or healthcare experience who are interested in specializing in cardiac sonography. This position participates in a structured on-the-job (OTJ) training program focused on echocardiography within a high-volume cardiology practice.

The trainee will support clinical operations while progressively developing the skills required to independently perform high-quality echocardiograms under the supervision of credentialed sonographers and physicians.

Key Responsibilities

Training & Skill Development

  • Participate in a structured OTJ echocardiography training program
  • Learn and perform standard echocardiographic views (2D, M-mode, Doppler) under supervision
  • Develop proficiency in image acquisition, measurements, and study documentation
  • Progress toward completing required competencies and case volume (e.g., 600 studies for credentialing eligibility)

Clinical Support

  • Prepare patients for ultrasound and echocardiographic procedures
  • Verify patient identity, explain procedures, and ensure patient comfort
  • Assist with patient positioning and equipment setup
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EMR

Echocardiography Assistance

  • Assist credentialed sonographers during studies as needed
  • Complete training program
  • Observe and support stress echocardiography procedures
  • Recognize basic cardiac anatomy and begin identifying abnormal findings (under supervision)
  • Monitor patient condition and escalate concerns appropriately

Workflow & Operations

  • Maintain efficient patient flow within imaging schedules
  • Ensure rooms and equipment are cleaned, stocked, and ready between patients
  • Accurately update patient status and room assignments in the EMR
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to support daily operations

Compliance & Safety

  • Adhere to infection control, safety, and OSHA guidelines
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA
  • Follow all organizational policies, including attendance and punctuality standards

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of an imaging program Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • Current BLS/CPR certification
  • Strong interest in cardiac imaging and willingness to complete OTJ training requirements

Preferred

  • Prior experience in ultrasound, radiology, cardiology, or vascular imaging
  • Experience with patient care in a clinical setting
  • Familiarity with EMR systems (athenaOne preferred)

Training Program Expectations

  • Ongoing competency evaluations by supervising sonographers and physicians
  • Eligibility to sit for credentialing exam upon completion of program requirements

Work Environment

  • High-volume outpatient cardiology practice
  • Frequent standing, walking, and patient interaction
  • Use of ultrasound equipment and clinical systems

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to assist with patient positioning
  • Ability to move and adjust ultrasound equipment

Pay: $30.76 - $37.05 per hour
