ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESUnder the direction of the Tool and Die Supervisor, works from plots to plan and perform the work required to construct and troubleshoot metal forms (dies) which are used in manufacturing precision metal parts.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE- High School Diploma or GED- Nine months of experience in die making- Possess the ability to read plots, basic mathematical ability- Working knowledge of metric measuring system, calipers, micrometers, and dial gaugesPreferred- Graduate of a two year course in basic machining- Basic programming experience- One or more years of experience in machine shop and/or die making- Possesses the ability to perform basic functions on a computerDUTIESBand Saw Operator- Selects material to be used as designated by blueprint; making initial cut- Measures steel plate and bars that will be cut to form parts of the final die; keeping an accurate inventory of stocked material- Sets band saw machine to proper position to cut material to the necessary sizeManual Milling Machine Operator- Face mills and squares material to a precise measurement using a vertical milling machine and other needed measuring devices to set parts at right angles to the milling head- Manually adjusts vise to hold exact position of part: (utilizing a digital read out) sets quill or knee to proper depth to be milled- Checks accuracy of workNumerical Control (NC) Milling Machine Operator- Face mills material to an accurate measurement using a vertical numerical controlled milling machine- Positions material to be milled on magnetic table of machine using measuring devices as needed, ensuring material is lying flat and not warped or lying on metal chips- Manually programs machine for milling, per specified instructionsSurface Grinder Machine Operator- Operates grinder to achieve a precision ground surface on the die plates- Positions part on magnetic table ensuring the part is secure and not lying on debris- Sets the grinding wheel to proper depth of cut, measures plates with micrometer to assure precise thickness is acquired- When process is complete, cleans part and work area.Computerized Numerical Controlled (CNC) Programmer/OperatorLaser- Programs/operates a computerized machining center which bores, mills, taps, etc., by utilizing a program tape from the CAD/CAM system- Arranges materials to be processed and makes necessary adjustments to program- While CNC is in operation, observes to detect potential errors or problems, making corrections as needed- Removes, deburrs, and cleans finished partsWire- Programs/operates a computerized machine that electronically discharges parts in a multitude of shapes to absolute measurements- Installs wire for machining- Arranges part to be machined on EDM table using measuring devices as needed- Utilizes program tape from CAD/CAM system to operate machine- While EDM is in operation, observes process to ensure accuracy- Removes and cleans finished partHeat Treatment- Adjusts controls on oven to heat material to approximately 1700 degrees Fahrenheit or 930 degrees Celsius- Prepares material for heat treatment by ensuring all previous machining as indicated on blueprint has been completed- Places material in oven and secures oven door- Sets oven controls according to material type and hardness required- When heat treatment is complete, submerses part in coolant or air cools parts. Cryogenic processing may be usedDie Assembly- Assembles dies according to blueprint and cut sheet instructions; ensuring all bolts, screws, pins, etc. are collected- Modifies dies sent from outside sources to fit Oneda Corporation presses- Maintains inventory of hardware and orders supplies as needed, following appropriate policies and proceduresOther Duties- Ensures all machines are cleaned of debris, coolant, and material at the completion of use- Performs a preventative maintenance on all shop machines daily, to include checking lubricants and fluid levels- Completes all appropriate documentation throughout the production process- Occasionally operates lathe, radial drill press, bench drill press, drill/tool sharpener and press machinesSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES- Assists and mentors Tool and Die Apprentice(s)TRAINING REQUIREMENTS- Forklift CertificationQUALITY STANDARDS- Possesses the knowledge of quality, environmental, and company policies and procedures; ensuring all products are produced efficiently and effectively to meet the established requirements.PHYSICAL DEMANDS- Required to work in a sitting or standing position, on a hard surface, for extended periods of time. Will be required to stoop, bend, and lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.). Required to complete some reading and computer work. Vision requirement minimum is 20/40 near and distant (with or without corrective lens).PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT- Wears safety shoes, glasses, gloves (as required/desired), and ear plugs while in the production area, this includes the die shop and warehouse. Appropriate protective equipment will be worn while operating the forklift.WORK ENVIRONMENT- Works inside of a temperature controlled plant where there is a great deal of noise from presses. The work will be dusty, dirty, and greasy.
