ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESUnder the direction of the Tool and Die Supervisor, works from plots to plan and perform the work required to construct and troubleshoot metal forms (dies) which are used in manufacturing precision metal parts. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE- High School Diploma or GED- Nine months of experience in die making- Ability to read plots; basic mathematical ability- Working knowledge of metric measuring system, calipers, micrometers, and dial gaugesPreferred- Graduate of a two year course in basic machining- Basic programming experience- One or more years of experience in machine shop and/or die making- Ability to perform basic functions on a computer DUTIESBand Saw Operator- Selects material per blueprint; makes initial cut- Measures steel plate and bars to be cut; keeps accurate inventory- Sets band saw to proper position to cut material to sizeManual Milling Machine Operator- Face mills and squares material to precise measurement using a vertical milling machine and measuring devices- Sets vise and quill/knee to proper depth; utilizes digital readout- Checks accuracy of workNumerical Control (NC) Milling Machine Operator- Face mills material to accurate measurement using a vertical NC milling machine- Positions material on magnetic table using measuring devices- Manually programs machine per instructionsSurface Grinder Machine Operator- Operates grinder to achieve precision ground surfaces on die plates- Positions part on magnetic table; ensures it is secure/clean- Sets grinding wheel depth; measures with micrometer; cleans part and areaComputerized Numerical Controlled (CNC) Programmer/Operator – Laser- Programs/operates machining center (bores, mills, taps) using program from CAD/CAM- Arranges materials and adjusts program as needed- Observes operations to detect/correct errors- Removes, deburrs, and cleans finished partsWire (EDM)- Programs/operates computerized EDM to discharge parts to absolute measurements- Installs wire; arranges part on EDM table using measuring devices- Uses program tape from CAD/CAM; observes for accuracy- Removes and cleans finished partHeat Treatment- Adjusts oven controls to heat material to approx. 1700°F/930°C- Prepares material per blueprint; places material in oven and secures door- Sets controls per material/hardness; quenches or air cools (cryo may be used)Die Assembly- Assembles dies per blueprint/cut sheet; ensures all hardware gathered- Modifies dies from outside sources to fit presses- Maintains hardware inventory; orders supplies per proceduresOther Duties- Cleans machines after use; performs daily PM checks on shop machines- Completes all required documentation during production- May operate lathe, radial drill press, bench drill press, drill/tool sharpener, and press machines SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES- Assists and mentors Tool and Die Apprentice(s) TRAINING REQUIREMENTS- Forklift Certification QUALITY STANDARDS- Knowledge of quality, environmental, and company policies/procedures; ensure products meet requirements PHYSICAL DEMANDS- Sitting or standing on hard surface for extended periods; stooping, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs; reading and computer work; vision minimum 20/40 near and distant (with/without correction) PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT- Safety shoes, glasses, gloves (as required/desired), ear plugs in production areas including die shop and warehouse; appropriate PPE when operating forklift WORK ENVIRONMENT- Temperature-controlled plant with significant noise from presses; dusty, dirty, greasy; exposure to sharp edges and chemicals in oil This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities.
