ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESUnder the direction of the Tool and Die Supervisor, works from plots to plan and perform the work required to construct and troubleshoot metal forms (dies) which are used in manufacturing precision metal parts. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE- High School Diploma or GED- Nine months of experience in die making- Possess the ability to read plots, basic mathematical ability- Working knowledge of metric measuring system, calipers, micrometers, and dial gaugesPreferred- Graduate of a two year course in basic machining- Basic programming experience- One or more years of experience in machine shop and/or die making- Possesses the ability to perform basic functions on a computer DUTIESBand Saw Operator- Selects material to be used as designated by blueprint; making initial cut- Measures steel plate and bars to be cut; keeping accurate inventory of material- Sets band saw machine to proper position to cut material to sizeManual Milling Machine Operator- Face mills and squares material to precise measurement using a vertical milling machine- Manually adjusts vise; sets quill or knee to proper depth- Checks accuracy of workNumerical Control (NC) Milling Machine Operator- Face mills material using a vertical numerical controlled milling machine- Positions material on magnetic table; ensures it is flat and free of debris- Manually programs machine for milling per instructionsSurface Grinder Machine Operator- Operates grinder to achieve precision ground surfaces on die plates- Sets grinding wheel, measures with micrometer for precise thicknessCNC Programmer/Operator – Laser and Wire EDM- Programs/operates computerized machining centers using CAD/CAM programs- Arranges materials, adjusts programs, observes operation, deburrs/cleans finished partsHeat Treatment- Adjusts oven controls and heat treats material per specifications; quenches or air coolsDie Assembly- Assembles dies per blueprint and cut sheet; modifies dies from outside sources; maintains hardware inventoryOther Duties- Cleans machines after use; performs daily preventive maintenance; completes required documentation; occasionally operates additional shop equipment SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES- Assists and mentors Tool and Die Apprentice(s) TRAINING REQUIREMENTS- Forklift Certification QUALITY STANDARDS- Knowledge of quality, environmental, and company policies and procedures; ensures products meet established requirements PHYSICAL DEMANDS- Sitting/standing on hard surface for extended periods; stooping, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs; reading/computer work; vision minimum 20/40 near and distant (with or without correction) PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT- Safety shoes, glasses, gloves (as required/desired), and ear plugs in production area, die shop, and warehouse; appropriate PPE when operating forklift WORK ENVIRONMENT- Temperature-controlled plant with noise from presses; work may be dusty, dirty, greasy; exposure to sharp edges and oils This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of the employee.
