ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Tool and Die Supervisor, works from plots to plan and perform the work required to construct and troubleshoot metal forms (dies) used in manufacturing precision metal parts. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED; nine months of experience in die making; ability to read plots and perform basic mathematical calculations; working knowledge of metric measuring system, calipers, micrometers, and dial gauges. Preferred: graduate of a two year course in basic machining; basic programming experience; one or more years of experience in machine shop and/or die making; ability to perform basic functions on a computer. DUTIES: Band Saw Operator (selects material per blueprint, measures and cuts, sets band saw); Manual Milling Machine Operator (face mills and squares material, sets quill/knee depth, checks accuracy); Numerical Control (NC) Milling Machine Operator (face mills on vertical NC, positions material, manually programs per instructions); Surface Grinder Machine Operator (achieves precision ground surfaces, sets wheel depth, measures with micrometer, cleans); Computerized Numerical Controlled (CNC) Programmer/Operator – Laser (programs/operates machining center using CAD/CAM program tape, arranges materials, adjusts program, observes operation, removes and deburrs parts); Wire (programs/operates EDM wire machine to absolute measurements, installs wire, arranges part, uses CAD/CAM tape, monitors accuracy, cleans finished part); Heat Treatment (operates oven, prepares material, sets controls by material type and hardness, cools parts); Die Assembly (assembles per blueprint, modifies dies from outside sources, maintains inventory and orders supplies); Other Duties (cleans machines, performs preventative maintenance, completes documentation, occasionally operates lathe, drill presses, sharpeners, and press machines). SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists and mentors Tool and Die Apprentice(s). TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Forklift Certification. QUALITY STANDARDS: Knowledge of quality, environmental, and company policies and procedures. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sitting or standing on hard surface for extended periods; stooping, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs; reading and computer work; vision minimum 20/40 (with or without correction). PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Safety shoes, glasses, gloves (as required/desired), and ear plugs in production areas. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Temperature-controlled plant with loud noise from presses; dusty, dirty, greasy; exposure to sharp edges and oils.
