Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Assistant Director of Engineering performs various tasks to assist with the operations of the Engineering Department including but not limited to surveying, field / office computations, computer aided drafting and maintenance of records and other associated duties.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statement of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required, assigned and expected aside from those set forth below to address operational needs and changing operational practices.

  • Land and Construction Surveying – Assist with field surveys using GPS, Total Station w/Prism Rod, Automatic Level w/ Level Rod, Measuring Tapes and other items incidental to surveying.
  • Drafting – Use of computer aided drafting with associated engineering and surveying software to create survey plats, construction plans, standard detail drawings, maps and sketches.
  • Calculations and Quantity Measurements – Make field or office measurements using various measuring devices to obtain units such as feet, square feet, yards, square or cubic yards, acreage and other units of measure to determine quantities associated with engineering or surveying.
  • Maintenance of Records – Maintains engineering and surveying data, project file, plats, plans and maps

Qualifications

Education & Experience Guidelines
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities required for this position would be:

Education/Training
High school diploma or GED equivalent with a minimum of five years of experience, education, and/or training in engineering and surveying. Valid driver’s license required.

Experience
Minimum of five years of experience, education, and/or training in engineering and surveying.

Licenses or Certifications Required
Possession of a valid driver’s license.

The following generally describes the knowledge and abilities required in order to successfully perform the assigned duties of the position:

Knowledge of:

  • Basic use of surveying equipment such as GPS, Total Station, Automatic Level and other related equipment.
  • Engineering and surveying principles in order to review and interpret plats, maps, and plans. Computer skills to create and utilize spreadsheets

Ability to:

  • Use surveying and computer aided software produce all survey related drawings and basic engineering plans.
  • Perform all aspects of surveying related work including but not limited to property boundary and easement surveys, topographic surveys, construction and quantity surveys construction staking and required calculations.
  • Read, interpret, and comprehend deeds, plans, specifications, and technical manuals/drawings.
  • Prepare written documents such as deeds and sketches in a clear and legible manner.
  • Regularly walk, stand, crouch or stoop, frequently lift, and carry survey equipment up, down and across uneven terrain, cut or remove brush and other vegetation with bush axes or machetes, digging, endure heat/humidity and cold.
  • Communicate effectively in a professional manner with supervisors, co-workers, and the general public.
