As an Engineering Manager, Web at FlightAware you’ll provide leadership, technical guidance, and product vision to a team of web engineers and collaborate with cross-functional partners to design and develop services, products, and infrastructure used by thousands of customers each day. FlightAware’s product and service portfolio is expansive, and you will operate across FlightAware’s industry-leading website, paid aviation products, customer-facing APIs, integral systems like authentication, billing, and authorization, and more.
In this role, you will lead, support, and inspire the engineers in your team. As a hands-on leader, you’ll help them fulfill technical, operational, and business requirements inside and outside of the code. You’ll work alongside senior engineers and partners across Product, Design, Sales, Marketing, and Engineering to guide architecture and delivery of major infrastructure and product improvements. The ideal candidate will be able to solve complex technical challenges while delivering incredible improvements to product reliability and quality.

What You Will Do:
- Lead and support a culture of collaboration, critique, and candid feedback.
- Mentor and grow engineers to foster an extremely high-performing team.
- Contribute architectural solutions and code implementations at the senior engineer level as part of your hands-on work with the team (code-review, backlog engineer participation, jump starting new projects, taking on tickets). You will split your time fairly evenly across people management and coding.
- Work with stakeholders and product owners to define roadmaps.
- Lead teams that ship major new improvements to a visible and important product or area.
- Collaborate with product owners and engineering leadership to break down complex projects into smaller pieces and iterate on their design and implementation.
- Develop your team’s skills and advance their careers. You won’t shy away from performance conversations, and you recognize the relationship between objective feedback and career growth.
- Assist with incident response, manage on-call rotations, SLA creation and management, and runbook creation.
- Work with the Talent Acquisition & HR teams to interview, onboard, and retain top talent.
What You Will Learn:
- Develop a deep understanding of the aviation industry and collaborate with cross-functional partners across FlightAware engineering and the Collins Aerospace organization.
- Apply modern web architectures, frameworks, and testing methodologies to designing and delivering software.
- YOU will coach and mentor engineers on the most recent thinking regarding best practices for software development, ranging from computer science fundamentals to 12 Factor app methodology.
- Will learn how to navigate and embrace change, overcome challenges, and continuously improve your processes and practices.
- Extend your management skillset through continuous learning, trainings, feedback, and coaching.
Qualifications You Must Have:
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience
- Software engineering leadership experience working with and managing engineers across several specialties creating, delivering, and operating highly reliable, scalable services and products.
- Individual contributor engineering experience with fluency in HTML, CSS, and Javascript/ES6, plus experience with Typescript, Go, Next.js, React, Astro, Tailwind, Daisy, NX, or PostgreSQL. You have a demonstrated ability to represent your team and the work to audiences with differing levels of technical fluency.
- Experience with system/software architecture design, building large web applications and interactive experiences.
- Hiring manager experience with the full recruitment lifecycle including attracting, recruiting, and retaining top engineering talent.
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Experience with cloud technologies like AWS, Cloudflare, Vercel, Netlify, or similar.
- Experience with microservice and API design, such as OpenAPI specifications and graphql concepts and schemas.
- Experience in 2D/3D GIS, mapping technologies, and high-performance map rendering in a web environment (such as Maplibre, http://Deck.GL , D3, or similar).
- Experience with cloud native methods, architectures, and technologies, like DevSecOps, Open Telemetry, Docker, Kubernetes, Knative, Grafana, Helm, or Istio.
- Expertise in system reliability or front-end user interface design and implementation.
- Execution focused with an ability to navigate ambiguity. Have worked successfully in a small company or an entrepreneurial environment.
- Interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence. Deeply empathetic and caring. You possess a willingness to empower and inspire commitment and a positive attitude in a team.
- Ability and willingness to be hands-on when needed.
- An agile mindset with a focus on learning, rapid iteration, continuous improvement, and an openness to new approaches.
- You are a private pilot, you are looking to pursue your private pilot license, or have a passion for aviation.

The salary range for this role is 132,400 USD - 251,600 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
