Job Summary
The Vascular Echo Sonographer performs non-invasive diagnostic procedures to assess cardiovascular health, including echocardiography, vascular studies, and electrocardiograms (EKGs). This role ensures the acquisition of high-quality images and accurate diagnostic data to support physicians in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular and peripheral vascular conditions.
Essential Functions
- Performs diagnostic echocardiograms, carotid duplex studies, venous/arterial studies, and EKGs in accordance with established protocols
- Reviews patient history and communicates exam expectations and procedures
- Operates imaging equipment and adjusts parameters for optimal image quality
- Documents findings, ensures completion of exams, and communicates critical results as needed
- Responds appropriately to changes in patient condition and alerts nursing/medical staff
- Assists with safety checks, infection control procedures, and equipment troubleshooting
- Maintains adequate patient comfort, dignity, and privacy throughout procedures
- Participates in call rotation and weekend/holiday schedules as required
- Ensures timely completion of documentation and exam logs
- Supports continuous quality improvement efforts and maintains competency in imaging standards
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Advanced knowledge of cardiac and vascular anatomy and physiology
- Proficient in the use of ultrasound systems and PACS documentation
- Effective interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and allied health personnel
- Must be detail-oriented, organized, and able to multitask in a clinical setting
- Must be able to stand, walk, and assist with patient positioning and equipment transport
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Completion of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Technology program preferred
Licenses/Certifications
- Registered or registry-eligible with ARDMS (RDCS and RVT) or CCI (RCS and RVS); must obtain registry within 12 months of hire
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
Experience
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in echocardiography and vascular sonography preferred
- Must demonstrate strong critical thinking and the ability to function with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment
