Job Summary:
Performs and supports compliance activities ensuring that assigned Financial Management Services (FMS) line of business is operating in accordance with anti-money laundering (AML) and Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) regulatory requirements and applicable internal policies. Administers and maintains AML/BSA programs and transaction monitoring systems. Collaborates with Synovus' corporate AML compliance function promoting alignment without dependence. Assists in the establishment and enforcement of data validation controls to minimize risk. Addresses compliance deficiencies and works to implement corrective measures, policies, and/or procedures. Performs non-AML/BSA testing, control and other risk functions as requested.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participates in the development, administration, and monitoring of Compliance programs and processes ensuring compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) and Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) regulations governing its operations and product offerings. Researches compliance deficiencies and assists in developing and implementing corrective actions.
  • Conducts transaction monitoring alert reviews, including researching transaction and customer activity, drafting comprehensive descriptions and preparing case materials for cases escalated to investigation. Creates, calibrates and updates detection scenarios. Maintains scenario statistics and interacts with transaction monitoring team and management regarding changes to detection scenario thresholds.
  • Performs quality control testing to accurately evaluate the execution of processes ensuring adherence to internal and external regulations, polices and procedures. Performs analyses related to due diligence, sanctions filtering, bank secrecy/cash reporting and Customer Identification program. Understands and follows operational controls to minimize errors. Works closely with other business units to ensure accuracy of information utilized by transaction monitoring system and other regulatory requirements.
  • Conducts AML investigations including transaction monitoring, suspicious activity monitoring to identify customers posing a risk for either money laundering and/or terrorist financing. Serves as a resource on suspicious activity monitoring by communicating AML compliance and risk management requirements and implications. Reviews Customer Identification Verification (CIV) information for completeness, completing customer due diligence and performing enhanced due diligence (EDD) practices.
  • Prepares or may assist with preparing regular reporting for management and the Compliance Committee. Assists management in preparation of monthly/quarterly committee reports including those outside BSA/AMS area.
  • Participates in compliance testing not related to BSA/AML. Participates in Branch reviews and inspections. Participates in or conducts account reviews where Elder Abuse or other potentially fraudulent activities may be occurring. Reviews internal controls surrounding the disbursement / receipt of funds. Responds to requests from management regarding internal/external audits as requested.
  • Drafts and files Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) and other regulatory correspondence as required. Prepares and presents regular reporting to the Board of Directors and may participate in compliance testing not related to BSA/AML. May participate in branch reviews and inspections.
  • Remains knowledgeable of AML/BSA legal and regulatory matters affecting the compliance program. Participates in special projects as assigned. Provides regulatory guidance, advises and consults with operations teams to ensure full AML/BSA compliance.
  • Each team member is expected to be aware of risk within their functional area. This includes observing all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their role. Additionally, they should raise and report known or suspected violations to the appropriate Company authority in a timely fashion.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Intelligence Studies or a related field.
Minimum Experience: Three years of experience in AML/BSA compliance including KYC, monitoring for unusual activity, investigation and SAR reporting OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in state or federal trust institution or regulatory agency is preferred.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Post-graduate degree
  • Financial crime investigation experience
  • BSA/AML/OFAC Compliance related certification
  • Experience in state or federal trust institution, broker dealer or regulatory agency
