Job Summary | Troy University is seeking an energetic and dynamic, instrumental music education professional to join the faculty of the John M. Long School of Music faculty. The Long School of Music is a vital part of a dynamic, global university. Music education is at the heart of the School of Music’s mission. The successful candidate will have a strong background in instrumental music education with a documented record of outstanding teaching, experience with athletic bands including marching band and pep bands, and conducting. Responsibilities include: Assist with all aspects of a large, comprehensive university band program, including the “Sound of the South” Marching Band; direct the Basketball Pep Band; conduct Symphonic Band; teach music education methods courses (instrumental emphasis); assist with a nationally distinguished music education program (planning, assessment, and development), working in collaboration with faculty colleagues and School of Music leadership; assist in advising for music education majors and promoting student success; assist with the supervision of music education interns; contribute to undergraduate and graduate recruiting and retention; maintain an active regional/national professional presence and creative activity profile consistent with the expectations of tenure and promotion; participate in shared governance through service to the School, College, and University. Additional teaching responsibilities may be assigned based on departmental needs and candidate qualifications. Following preliminary review, select candidates will be asked to submit recorded examples of rehearsal and performance of both marching band and concert band. The start date for the position is July 1, 2025. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. |

Minimum Qualifications | 1. Ph.D., D.M.A., or Ed.D. in music, music education, or related field (or equivalent professional experience). ABD status will be considered for appointment; a completed doctorate will be required for tenure. 2. Significant marching band instruction and instrumental conducting experience in secondary and/or higher education. 3. Demonstrated ability and interest in working in a collegial and mutually supportive environment. |
Preferred Qualifications | 1. 3-5 years of experience with marching and concert bands. 2. Demonstrated record of excellence teaching at the undergraduate level. 3. Experience writing marching band drill and/or arranging. 4. Experience working with athletic bands, pep bands, and athletic departments. 5. At least three years of public school music teaching experience. 6. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect, empathy, and cultural humility. |
