SUMMARY: Performs manual labor of more than ordinary difficulty, which often involves the use of required skills. Employee may be called upon, as deemed necessary by the supervisor, to perform other duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Performs work to assist maintenance personnel such as rebuilding valves, working on pumps, motors, or other mechanical equipment. An Apprentice works under the leadership of the Maintenance Mechanic II. Repairs and replaces broken pipe inside plant grounds and river pump station. Cuts grass, trims weeds, bushes, and maintains plant grounds as required. Cleans, primes and paints mechanical equipment and buildings. Performs janitorial services at pumps stations, administration buildings, filter buildings and at other plant facilities as required. Cleans and washes trucks, sedimentation basins, clearwell and storage tanks. Employee must be able to climb heights up to 165 feet.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school graduation or GED required. Knowledge of maintenance and manual tasks.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedures manual. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole number, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or equipment, stoop, kneel, crouch; talk and hear. The employee must be able to climb and function in heights up to and including 165 feet.

The employee must occasionally lift and be able to move object of up to fifty pounds; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works in high precarious places (ex. Water storage tanks) and in all outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee regularly works with and around chemicals, associated tanks, piping, and chemical feed systems commonly found in the water industry.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
